What Is Difference Between いえ, うち and おたく?

いえ, うち and おたく” might have been one of the complicated words for you learners. Let me introduce how you correctly use these words “いえ, うち and おたく” today!

いえ / うち / おたく (ie-uchi-otaku)

House / Home / Your House

いえ, うち and おたく” mean “House, Home and Your House”. The nuance of “いえ” is “House” and “うち” is “Home”, lastly, “おたく” is “Your House”. “いえ” is basically used as the meaning of “physical” and “うち” is “psychological”. So “うち” is only used for “my home”. For instance, “わたしうち(my home)”, “あなたのいえ(your house)”. You won’t be able to use “あなたのうち” which is wrong. However, you could say “わたしいえ” and “あなたのいえ” that are both correct. Thus, when native speakers hear “わたしうち“, they fell a sense of familiarity instead of “わたしいえ“. And “おたく(your house)” is a honorific word of “あなたのいえ(your house)”, so “おたく” is often used as formal. Furthermore, オタク is “geek”. The pronunciation of both “おたく” and “オタク” is absolutely same though.
