ころ vs. のとき: How to Correctly Use These From Today

Did you think “のころ” and “のとき” are the same meaning? The answer is not wrong, however, they slightly have a different nuance. Let me introduce what their different nuance is today!

[wp-svg-icons icon=”checkmark-circle” wrap=”i”] わたしが__のころ (watashi-ga-nokoro)/ __のとき (watashi-ga-notoki)

[wp-svg-icons icon=”arrow-right-2″ wrap=”span”] When I was ___ / 时期/时候 / 무렵/때 / Hồi/ Thời, Khi/ Lúc

わたしが__のころ and わたしが__のとき” mean “When I was ___” and which have been used to “describe the past” that is not only used for the subject of “わたし(I)”, but it also used for the subject of “あなた(You)”, “かれ/彼女かのじょ(He/She)” and “かれら/彼女かのじょら/それら(They)”. Using “__のころ” and “__のとき” have subtle differences. When people use “__のころ” to describe the past, it is a little bit unspecific, whereas when people use ” __のとき” to describe the past is specific. For instance, although “わたし中学ちゅうがくころ” and “わたし中学ちゅうがくとき” would be translated to “When I was in middle school”, people use “中学ちゅうがくころ“, their memory is a little vague. However people use “中学ちゅうがくとき“, their memory is clear. That’s what the subtle difference between them is.
