What is the difference between “とともに and につれて”? They have subtle differences. Which is correct: “先生せんせいはなはじめるとともに友達ともだちた” or “先生せんせいはなはじめるにつれて友達ともだちた”? After reading this, you would be answering this question. Let me introduce what their subtle differences are and how you correctly use them such as native speakers today!

とともに (to-tomoni) / につれて (ni-tsurete)

As / 同时/随着 / 과 함께/에 데리고 / Cùng với’/dẫn đến

“とともに / つれて” means “As” and which has been used as the meaning of “during the time that”. The basic way to them is “___(verb)するとともに___(verb)する” and “___(verb)するにつれて___(verb)する”. For instance, 先生せんせいはなすとともにた。(As soon as the teacher started talking, I have slept.) and 先生せんせいはなすにつれてた。(As the teacher started talking, I have slept.). The big difference between them is that basically, とともに has the meaning of “as soon as” and “につれて” has the meaning of “gradually”.
