When you need to ask someone a question that’s important, complicated, or might make them upset and you first ask, you would be able to use “ちょっといてもいい?(chotto kiitemo ii)” which means “Can I ask you something?”. Everybody could use this phrase in daily conversations as casual. The polite way to use this phrase is “ちょっといてもいいですか?(chotto kiitemo ii desuka)” and which is also used in business situations as formal.
