どれ vs. どっち: The Easiest Way to Use These
What is the difference between “どれ(dore) and どっち(docchi)”? Which is used when options are three or more? After reading this, you would be answering this question. Let me introduce what their subtle differences are and how you correctly use them such as native speakers today!
[wp-svg-icons icon=”checkmark-circle” wrap=”i”] どれ(dore) / どっち(docchi)
[wp-svg-icons icon=”arrow-right-2″ wrap=”span”] Which / 哪个, 其中哪个(二选一) / 어느 것, 어느 쪽 / cái nào, cái nào(Dùng khi chỉ có 2 sự lựa chọn)
“どれ(dore) / どっち(docchi)” mean “Same” and which has been used as the meaning of “asking for information specifying one or more people or things from a definite set”. The basic way to use it is “どれがいい?(Which do you prefer?)” or “どっちがいい?(Which do you prefer?)”, etc. The tips for using them are that “どれ” only used when options are THREE OR MORE, whereas “どっち” is only used when options are TWO. That’s the difference between them. For instance, “この3つの内どれがいい?(Which one of these three do you prefer?)” which you wouldn’t be able to use “どっち” and “この2つの内どっちがいい?(Which one of these two do you prefer?)” which you wouldn’t be able to use “どれ”. Again when options are two “どっち” and three or more such as 4, 5, 6, 10, 20, 30, 100, 1000, etc “どれ”. Everyone could use “どれ” and “どっち” as casual, polite and formal such as “どれがいい?(Which do you prefer?)”/”どっちがいい?(Which do you prefer?)” as casual and “どれがいいですか?(Which do you prefer?)”/”どっちがいいですか?(Which do you prefer?)” as polite and formal. Lastly, “どっち” is used as casual and polite and “どちら” is used formal which are the same meaning.
