When asking “which one?” in Japanese, you have two key options: どれ (dore) and どっち (docchi). The difference comes down to how many options you’re choosing from. Getting this right will make your Japanese sound much more natural.
|---|---|---|
| Meaning | Which one (of three or more) | Which one (of two) — casual |
| Options | 3 or more choices | Exactly 2 choices |
| Formal version | どれ (same) | どちら (dochira) |
| Register | Neutral | Casual |
Which One? (Three or More Options)
どれ is used when choosing from three or more options. It is the standard word for “which one” in a general sense.
Which one do you like (from all of these)?
Which one will you go with?
Which apple is it (among several)?
Think of a menu with many items, a shelf of books, or a row of products — any time there are three or more, use
Which One? (Two Options, Casual)
どっち (short for どちら, dochira) is used when there are exactly two options. It is casual and very common in everyday conversation.
Coffee or tea, which do you want?
Which (of the two) do you like?
Right or left, which way do we turn?
The polite version of どっち is どちら (dochira), used in formal settings or with strangers.
どちら — The Polite Form of どっち
In formal or polite contexts, always replace どっち with どちら:
- (polite)コーヒーと紅茶、どちらになさいますか?— Which would you prefer, coffee or tea?
- (polite)どちらからいらっしゃいましたか?— Where are you from? (lit. Which place did you come from?)
Note: どちら can also mean “where” or “who” in polite speech, so context matters.
Side-by-Side: Three Scenarios
| Scenario | Use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Choosing from a menu of 5 items | |
| Choosing between coffee and tea | |
| Asking someone’s preference politely | |
How many options?
3 or more → どれNatural Conversations
Which of these 3 designs do you like?
— They’re all cute! But if I had to choose, maybe this one.
Curry or ramen, which do you want?
I want both! (lol)
