臭い vs. 匂い:Most Japanese Learners Still Don’t Know

“臭い(nioi) and 匂い(nio)” means “Smell” and which has been used as the meaning of “the characteristic of something that can be recognized or noticed using the nose”. The tips for using them are that “臭い” is ONLY used for “BAD SMELL”, whereas “匂い” is used for “BOTH GOOD AND BAD SMELL”. Although you would be able to say “変な臭いがする。(It smells bad.)” and “変な匂いがする。(It smells bad.)”, “変な臭いがする。(It smells bad.)” is used as “MORE BAD SMELL”. Additionally, you would be able to read both “臭い” and “臭い(It stinks.)”. The basic ways to use them are that “___は良い/変な匂いがする。(___ smell good/bad.)” and “___は変な臭いがする。(___ smell bad.)”, “___の匂い(a scent of ___)”, “___の臭い(a scent of ___)” etc. For instance, “これは良い匂いがする。(This smells good.)”, “これは変な臭いがする。(This smells bad.)”, “にんにくの匂い(the smell of garlic)” and “これは変な匂いがする。(This smells bad.)”, “タバコの臭い(cigarette smell)”, etc. Everyone could use “臭い” and “匂い” as casual, polite and formal such as “変な臭いがする。(It smells bad.)” and “良い匂いがするね。(It smells good.)” as casual and “変な臭いがします。(It smells bad.)” and “良い匂いがします。(It smells good.)” as polite and formal.
