Common Japanese Mistake: Confusing に (ni) and で (de) for Location

TOC

Two Particles, Two Different Uses of “Location”

Both に and で can mean “at” or “in” a place, which causes endless confusion. The fix is simple once you understand the underlying logic: に marks where something exists or where you go, while で marks where an action takes place.

The Core Distinction

ParticleUseAsk yourself
Location of existence (いる/ある) or destination of movementDoes something EXIST here, or am I GOING here?
Location where an action is performedIs something HAPPENING here?

に: Existence and Destination

SentenceReadingWhy に?
ねこがへやにいます。Neko ga heya ni imasu.Cat EXISTS in the room (いる = existence)
かばんがつくえのうえにあります。Kaban ga tsukue no ue ni arimasu.Bag EXISTS on the desk (ある = existence)
がっこうにいきます。Gakkou ni ikimasu.Going TO school (destination)
ホテルにとまります。Hoteru ni tomarimasu.Staying AT the hotel (destination/point of arrival)

で: Location of Action

SentenceReadingWhy で?
としょかんでべんきょうします。Toshokan de benkyou shimasu.Study HAPPENS at the library
レストランでたべます。Resutoran de tabemasu.Eating HAPPENS at the restaurant
こうえんでサッカーをします。Kouen de sakkaa wo shimasu.Soccer HAPPENS at the park

The Tricky Case: Same Place, Different Particle

The same location word can take either particle depending on the verb:

  • 「がっこうに います。」 — I am AT school (existence)
  • 「がっこうで べんきょうします。」 — I study AT school (action)
  • 「えきに つきます。」 — I arrive AT the station (destination point)
  • 「えきで のりかえます。」 — I transfer AT the station (action)

Common Mistake Examples

WrongCorrectWhy
うちにたべますうちでたべますEating is an action → で
としょかんでありますとしょかんにありますBook exists → に
パリにすんでいます ✓パリにすんでいます ✓すむ (to live) uses に — not an action location

Yuka Mixes Up に and で

Mistakes feel embarrassing in the moment but they are the fastest way to learn. Watch how Yuka makes a natural error — and how Rei explains the rule clearly enough to prevent it from happening again.

Yuka

Rei, I said 図書館にべんきょうします and my teacher marked it wrong. I thought に marks location?

Rei

に marks the location of existence — where something IS. で marks the location of action — where something HAPPENS. Studying is an action, so it’s 図書館でべんきょうします.

Yuka

Oh! So に would be for: 図書館に本があります?

Rei

Exactly right! 図書館に本があります — books exist IN the library (に, existence). 図書館で本をよみます — I read books AT the library (で, action). The test: is it existing or doing?

Yuka

What about going TO a place? にいきます — is that right?

Rei

Yes! に also marks direction and destination: にほんにいきます — I’m going TO Japan. で doesn’t work here. Think of に as ‘at/to/in’ for being and moving, で as ‘at/in’ for doing. With verbs of motion (いく、くる、かえる), always use に.
