Present Ongoing

〜ている has two main uses:

1. Action in progress right now:

今、電話をしている。 — I’m on the phone right now.

2. Resulting state (something happened and the result continues):

彼は結婚している。 — He is married. (= the state of having gotten married continues)

— The window is open. (= someone opened it, and it remains open)

Past Ongoing

〜ていた means either:

1. Was doing (at a past point in time):

昨日の3時、テレビを見ていた。 — At 3 PM yesterday, I was watching TV.

2. Was in a state (past resulting state):

当時、彼は結婚していた。 — At that time, he was married.

— The door was open. (when I arrived)

So ていた is just the past tense of ている?

Rei

Essentially yes! ていた = the past version of the ongoing state. If ている describes what’s happening NOW, ていた describes what was happening at some point in the PAST — either an action that was in progress or a state that existed.

Yuka

What’s the difference between 食べた and 食べていた?

Rei

Great question. 食べた = I ate (completed action, done). 食べていた = I was eating (action was in progress at a past moment — might have been interrupted). Use 食べていた when you want to show the action was ongoing at a specific past time.

Telling a Story with ていた

When narrating past events, ていた is perfect for setting the scene (background action):

彼女がドアを開けたとき、私は寝ていた。 — When she opened the door, I was sleeping.

(寝ていた = was in the state of sleeping; ドアを開けた = completed action)
