What’s the difference between a shrine and a temple?

Rei

神社 (jinja) = Shinto shrine (Japanese native religion). お寺 (otera) = Buddhist temple. One key sign: torii gates (red archways) are always Shinto shrines. Buddhist temples often have large gates (山門, sanmon) and pagodas. You can visit both regardless of your religion!

What should I do with my omikuji fortune slip?

Rei

If your fortune is 大吉 (daikichi) = great luck, take it home! If you get a bad fortune like 凶 (kyou), tie it to a special rack or tree branch at the shrine to leave the bad luck behind. Don’t throw omikuji in the trash — it’s disrespectful.
