What is the genkan and why is it important?

玄関 (genkan) is the entryway where you remove your shoes before stepping up into the home. This is a fundamental part of Japanese home culture — you ALWAYS remove shoes at the genkan. The raised floor level (上がり框, agarikamachi) marks the boundary between outside and inside. Entering with shoes on is a serious breach of etiquette!

What’s the difference between a 風呂場 and a トイレ in a Japanese home?

In Japanese homes, the bathroom (風呂場 = bathing room) and toilet (トイレ) are almost always in SEPARATE rooms! This is different from Western homes where they share a room. When someone asks to use the bathroom, they say お手洗いはどこですか? (Where is the restroom?) — not 風呂場.
