Simultaneous Actions

Attach ながら to the verb STEM (ます-form minus ます):

音楽を聴きながら勉強する。 — Study while listening to music.

— Walking while on the phone is dangerous.

Rule: Both actions must be performed by the SAME subject.

Even If / Even Though

Attach ても to the て-form: て → ても.

— Even if it rains, the game continues.

— Even if it’s expensive, I want to buy it.

— Even if you don’t eat, it’s okay.

JLPT Question Types

N4 questions often:

1. Give a situation and ask which pattern fits: ながら vs てから (after doing) — very common trap!

3. Combine: 忙しくても、音楽を聴きながら仕事する — Even when busy, I work while listening to music.

In the JLPT, when do they try to trick me with ながら?

Rei

The most common trap: confusing ながら (simultaneous) with てから (after). 勉強しながら食べる = study AND eat at the same time. 勉強してから食べる = study FIRST, then eat. If the question implies ‘after X happens, then Y,’ choose てから!

Yuka

And the ても trap?

Rei

Tests often give a sentence where the result is unexpected or contrary. If the sentence says ‘Despite A, B still happens,’ that’s ても. Watch for ‘even if,’ ‘even though,’ ‘no matter how much’ — all point to ても.
