Two frequently tested N4 grammar points: 〜ながら (while doing) and 〜ても (even if / even though). Master these and you’ll handle a major chunk of N4 grammar questions.
At a Glance
| Pattern | JLPT Level | Meaning | Key Usage |
|---|---|---|---|
| 〜ながら | N4 | While doing (simultaneously) | Same subject, simultaneous actions |
| 〜ても | N4 | Even if / even though | Concession — result doesn’t change |
〜ながら — Simultaneous Actions
Attach ながら to the verb STEM (ます-form minus ます):
音楽を聴きながら勉強する。 — Study while listening to music.
電話しながら歩くのは危ない。 — Walking while on the phone is dangerous.
Rule: Both actions must be performed by the SAME subject.
〜ても — Even If / Even Though
Attach ても to the て-form: て → ても. For negative: なくて → なくても.
雨が降っても、試合は続く。 — Even if it rains, the game continues.
高くても、買いたい。 — Even if it’s expensive, I want to buy it.
食べなくても、大丈夫です。 — Even if you don’t eat, it’s okay.
JLPT Question Types
N4 questions often:
1. Give a situation and ask which pattern fits: ながら vs てから (after doing) — very common trap!
2. Test negative form: ても vs なくても
3. Combine: 忙しくても、音楽を聴きながら仕事する — Even when busy, I work while listening to music.
In the JLPT, when do they try to trick me with ながら?

The most common trap: confusing ながら (simultaneous) with てから (after). 勉強しながら食べる = study AND eat at the same time. 勉強してから食べる = study FIRST, then eat. If the question implies ‘after X happens, then Y,’ choose てから!

And the ても trap?

Tests often give a sentence where the result is unexpected or contrary. If the sentence says ‘Despite A, B still happens,’ that’s ても. Watch for ‘even if,’ ‘even though,’ ‘no matter how much’ — all point to ても.
JLPT Practice Questions
1. 音楽を___ながら、運動するのが好きです。(I like exercising while ___.) → 聴き (listening)
2. どんなに疲れ___、毎日練習します。(No matter how tired I am, I practice every day.) → ても
3. 仕事をし___、電話してください。(While working, please call.) → ながら
Common Mistakes
| Wrong | Correct | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 食べながら (same as てから) | Different! | ながら = at the same time; てから = after |
| ても after dictionary form directly | て-form + も | 食べても not 食べるても |
Quick Quiz
1. I study while listening to music. → 音楽を聴きながら勉強する
2. Even if I’m busy, I’ll help. → 忙しくても、手伝います
3. After eating, I go for a walk. → 食べてから、散歩する (not ながら!)
