The JLPT N4 listening section is one of the most challenging parts for learners who have mainly studied from textbooks. This guide gives you proven strategies and what to listen for.

Strategy 1: Focus on the Last Sentence
In JLPT N4 conversations, the key information often comes at the END of the dialogue. Train yourself to hold attention through the whole conversation and weight the final speaker’s words heavily.
Strategy 2: Listen for Negation
JLPT frequently tests whether you catch a negative response. Key negative patterns to recognize:
• 〜ません / 〜ない (not doing) | ちがいます (that’s wrong) | いいえ (no) | じゃないですか (isn’t it?) | 〜ないで (without doing)
Strategy 3: Watch for Contrast (でも / が / けど)
When a speaker says A but then adds でも, が, or けど, the SECOND part often has the most important information:
行きたいですが、時間がありません。 — I want to go, but I don’t have time. (answer = can’t go)
The listening section is really fast. How do I keep up?

Two tricks: 1) Read the question BEFORE the audio plays — you only have a few seconds, but even knowing ‘What does the woman ask for?’ helps you focus. 2) Use the options to predict — if all choices are actions (buy, call, go), you know you’re listening for what action happens.

What kind of situations come up most in N4 listening?

Most common: telephone conversations, making plans, asking for directions, confirming meeting times, shopping / ordering food, and asking for explanations. Practice these scenarios especially! Natural-sounding dialogues in these settings are exactly what appears.
