N4 Test Structure

SectionTimeContent
Language Knowledge (文字・語彙・文法)30 minKanji reading, vocabulary, grammar fill-ins
Reading (読解)Included aboveShort and medium texts
Listening (聴解)35 minDialogues, situational responses

Vocabulary Strategy

• Aim for recognition of ~1,500 words | Focus on N4-specific words not in N5 | Learn via sentences, not lists | Use Anki with N4 deck (JLPT Sensei, Nihongonomori)

Most tested: nouns related to work/school/travel; transitive/intransitive verb pairs (壊す/壊れる, 開ける/開く); N4 adjectives with nuance (悔しい, 珍しい)

Grammar Strategy

Top 10 N4 grammar points to master:

1. て-form extensions: てもいい, てはいけない, てみる, ておく, てしまう, てほしい | 2. Conditional forms: と, たら, ば, なら | 3. あげる/もらう/くれる and their て-forms | 4. 〜ながら | 5. 〜ても | 6. Potential form (〜られる/〜える) | 7. Passive form (〜られる) | 8. Causative form (〜させる) | 9. 〜たい vs 〜たがる | 10. Plain form uses (quotation, nominalization, before まえに)

Reading Strategy

• N4 reading texts are shorter than N3 but include hiragana-heavy paragraphs | Read the question first | Look for contrast words: でも, しかし, けれど | The main point is usually stated twice — once in intro, once in conclusion

Listening Strategy

• Practice with N4-level audio every day (JLPT Sensei, NHK Web Easy) | Focus on catching the final decision in task-based dialogues | Learn to recognize すみません, ちょっと, 〜んですが as soft refusals or hesitation signals

How long should I study for N4 if I passed N5?

Rei

Most learners who passed N5 need 3–6 months of focused study for N4 (assuming 1 hour/day). That’s roughly 100–200 hours additional study. The jump from N5 to N4 is significant: more grammar patterns, more kanji, and faster listening audio. Use official JLPT practice materials and take at least 2 full timed practice tests before the real exam.

What score do I need to pass N4?

Rei

You need to pass TWO thresholds: 1) Total score ≥ 90/180 (50%), AND 2) Each section must meet the minimum (Language Knowledge ≥38, Reading ≥19, Listening ≥19). Failing even one section fails the whole exam. Strategy: don’t neglect any section — a high listening score can’t save you if reading is too low.
