に vs で: The Exact Mistakes Learners Make and How to Fix Them

に and で are both location particles — but they mark completely different things. Mixing them up is one of the top particle mistakes learners make. Here’s exactly where learners go wrong.

ParticleCore UseExample
Location of existence / direction / goal公園にいる (exist at park) / 東京に行く (go to Tokyo)
Location of action / means / reason公園で遊ぶ (play at park) / バスで来る (come by bus)

Mistake 1: に for Action Location

Yuka

「図書館に勉強する」は間違い!図書館勉強する。
(「図書館に勉強する」is wrong! Study at the library → で.)

Rei

「に」は存在する場所。「で」は何かする場所!
(に = where something exists. で = where you do something!)

Rule: If a verb describes an action being performed, use . If the verb is いる/ある (existence), use .

WrongCorrectVerb Type
カフェに読むカフェで読むAction verb
駅に待つ駅で待つAction verb
家に猫がいる家に猫がいる ✓Existence verb — に correct

Mistake 2: で for Destination

Yuka

「東京で行く」は変だよ。行く先は「に」!
(「東京で行く」sounds strange. Destination uses に!)

Rei

「東京に行く」が正しい。
(「東京に行く」is correct.)

Direction and destination verbs (行く, 来る, 帰る, 入る, 着く) take , not で.

Mistake 3: Confusing で (Means) with に

SituationCorrect ParticleExample
Transport method電車で来た (came by train)
Language used英語で話す (speak in English)
Tool/instrument箸で食べる (eat with chopsticks)
Material木で作る (made of wood)

Mistake 4: に after ある/いる vs で after Action Verbs

Yuka

「駅に電車がある」と「駅で電車を待つ」— 同じ「駅」でも違うね!
(Same 「駅」but different: に with ある, で with 待つ.)
