に and で are both location particles — but they mark completely different things. Mixing them up is one of the top particle mistakes learners make. Here’s exactly where learners go wrong.
| Particle | Core Use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| に | Location of existence / direction / goal | 公園にいる (exist at park) / 東京に行く (go to Tokyo) |
| で | Location of action / means / reason | 公園で遊ぶ (play at park) / バスで来る (come by bus) |
Mistake 1: に for Action Location
「図書館に勉強する」は間違い!図書館で勉強する。
(「図書館に勉強する」is wrong! Study at the library → で.)

「に」は存在する場所。「で」は何かする場所!
(に = where something exists. で = where you do something!)
Rule: If a verb describes an action being performed, use で. If the verb is いる/ある (existence), use に.
| Wrong | Correct | Verb Type |
|---|---|---|
| カフェに読む | カフェで読む | Action verb |
| 駅に待つ | 駅で待つ | Action verb |
| 家に猫がいる | 家に猫がいる ✓ | Existence verb — に correct |
Mistake 2: で for Destination

「東京で行く」は変だよ。行く先は「に」!
(「東京で行く」sounds strange. Destination uses に!)

「東京に行く」が正しい。
(「東京に行く」is correct.)
Direction and destination verbs (行く, 来る, 帰る, 入る, 着く) take に, not で.
Mistake 3: Confusing で (Means) with に
| Situation | Correct Particle | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Transport method | で | 電車で来た (came by train) |
| Language used | で | 英語で話す (speak in English) |
| Tool/instrument | で | 箸で食べる (eat with chopsticks) |
| Material | で | 木で作る (made of wood) |
Mistake 4: に after ある/いる vs で after Action Verbs

「駅に電車がある」と「駅で電車を待つ」— 同じ「駅」でも違うね!
(Same 「駅」but different: に with ある, で with 待つ.)
Quick Quiz
1. 公園 ___ 走る。(Run at the park.)
→ で
2. 大阪 ___ 帰る。(Return to Osaka.)
→ に
3. 日本語 ___ 話す。(Speak in Japanese.)
→ で
