JLPT N4 Kanji List: All 166 Characters to Master

You cleared JLPT N5. You can read hiragana and katakana, you know the basic 80 kanji, and you can survive a conversation about directions or ordering food. Now N4 is on the horizon — and with it comes a jump that surprises many learners: 166 additional kanji, most of them built for expressing ideas, actions, and relationships that go well beyond tourist basics.

This guide gives you every single N4 kanji in organized, study-ready tables — sorted by theme, complete with readings, meanings, and compound word examples. Work through this list systematically and you will have the kanji foundation to handle N4 reading and vocabulary sections with confidence.

Yuka

N4 kanji look intimidating at first, but once you see the patterns — how 電 appears in 電話, 電車, 電気 — everything clicks. Learn the kanji in context, not in isolation!

N4 Kanji vs N5 Kanji: What Changes?

N5 kanji were mostly concrete and visual: numbers (一二三), basic nature (山川木), simple body parts (口目手), and everyday objects (本車人). Many N5 kanji look like what they mean.

N4 kanji shift toward abstraction, social relationships, and actions. You will encounter characters that represent emotions (思う, 困る), institutions (病院, 銀行), and time concepts (毎週, 以前). The key differences:

Meaning typeConcrete (numbers, nature, body)Abstract (emotion, institution, time)
Readings per kanjiUsually 1–2Often 2–4 (on–kun pairs)
Compound complexitySimple (山川, 大小)Multi-kanji words (電話, 病院, 図書館)
Context requiredLow (standalone use common)High (meaning shifts with partner kanji)

Key insight for N4: Focus on how kanji combine. Knowing that 電 means electricity alone is not enough — you need to recognize 電話 (telephone), 電車 (train), 電気 (electricity/light), and 電池 (battery) as complete units.

Work & Society Kanji

These kanji appear constantly in daily life contexts — shopping, banking, hospitals, and transportation. They form the backbone of N4 reading passages.

Exam Reading Patterns: What N4 Actually Tests

Understanding the kanji is one thing — knowing how the exam tests them is another. N4 kanji appear in two main question types in the Language Knowledge section.

Pattern 1: Kanji Reading (漢字読み)

You see a word in kanji and choose the correct reading from 4 options. The traps are usually:

  • On-yomi vs. kun-yomi confusion: 行く (いく = go) vs. 銀行 (ぎんこう = bank). Same kanji, different reading.
  • Similar-looking kanji: 待つ (まつ = wait) vs. 持つ (もつ = hold). One stroke changes meaning and reading.
  • Compound word readings differ from standalone: 今日 reads as きょう (today), NOT こんにち as you might expect from こん + にち.

Pattern 2: Vocabulary in Context (文脈語彙)

A sentence has a blank, and you choose the correct kanji word. The challenge is selecting between near-synonyms:

Trap PairDifference
使う vs. 働く使う = use (an object); 働く = work (as a person)
始める vs. 開ける始める = start (an action/event); 開ける = open (a door, box)
知る vs. 分かる知る = come to know (a fact); 分かる = understand (a concept)
早い vs. 速い早い = early (time); 速い = fast (physical speed)
変える vs. 変わる変える = change (transitive, you do it); 変わる = change (intransitive, it changes)
開く vs. 開ける開く = open (intransitive); 開ける = open (transitive)

High-Frequency Reading Quiz Format

N4 reading passages use these kanji heavily in context. Train yourself to recognize them in sentences, not just in isolation:

  • 時間がありません → じかんがありません (no time)
  • 電車が遅れています → でんしゃがおくれています (train is running late)
  • 病院に予約を入れました → びょういんによやくをいれました (made a hospital appointment)
  • 説明を聞いてください → せつめいをきいてください (please listen to the explanation)
  • 先週から練習しています → せんしゅうかられんしゅうしています (I have been practicing since last week)

Study Strategy for N4 Kanji

Raw memorization of 166 kanji in isolation is the least efficient approach. Here is a structured method that works:

Step 1: Group by Theme (Weeks 1–3)

Use the category tables in this article as your roadmap. Work through one category per study session (30–40 minutes). Start with Work & Society kanji because they appear most frequently in N4 reading passages.

Step 2: Learn Compounds, Not Characters (Weeks 2–4)

For every new kanji, immediately learn 2–3 compound words that use it. When you see 電, do not just think “electricity” — think 電話, 電車, 電気, 電池. The brain retains patterns far better than isolated symbols.

Step 3: Use Spaced Repetition (Ongoing)

Apps like Anki or WaniKani let you review kanji at optimized intervals. Create cards that show the compound word in a sentence, not just the kanji alone. This trains your brain for exam-style reading.

Step 4: Read Native Material at Your Level (Weeks 3–6)

NHK Web Easy (nhk.or.jp/news/easy) publishes simplified Japanese news articles at approximately N4 level. Spend 15 minutes per day reading. When you encounter an N4 kanji from this list in context, it cements the memory far better than flashcards alone.

Step 5: Practice N4 Past Papers (Final 2 Weeks)

JLPT past papers and practice tests are available from the official JLPT website and publishers like the Japan Times. Do timed vocabulary sections and track which kanji you get wrong. Review those specific characters the day before the exam.

Yuka

My biggest tip: when you get a kanji wrong in practice, write the compound word 5 times by hand and create one original sentence with it. That 3-minute exercise is worth more than reviewing a flashcard 20 times.
