JLPT N1 tests a wide range of advanced vocabulary — formal expressions, literary terms, abstract nouns, and compound words rarely heard in daily conversation. This guide introduces the key vocabulary types at N1 level and how to study them efficiently.
N1 vocabulary feels totally different from N2. There is no official list, so you have to learn by immersion.

The good news is that once you know the kanji well, many N1 words become guessable from context.
What Makes JLPT N1 Vocabulary Different?
N1 vocabulary is characterized by:
| Category | Description | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Formality | Formal and literary words rarely used in casual speech | 常┻である, ゆえに, もっとも |
| Register | Written language: essays, newspapers, literature | もっとも (most), じかに (indeed) |
| Compound nouns | Kanji compounds with on-yomi readings | 常識, 辺辺, 当初 |
| Classical roots | Words derived from classical Japanese | いとま, ややもすれば |
| Onomatopoeia | Advanced descriptive onomatopoeia | びっしり, はっきりと |
Core N1 Vocabulary Categories
1. Formal Adverbs and Conjunctions
These appear constantly in N1 reading passages and grammar questions:
- もっとも — certainly, to be sure (concedes a point before countering)
- じかに — indeed, in fact (emphasizes truth of something)
- のみならず — not only… but also (written form of だけでなく)
- にもかかわらず — despite, in spite of
- とにかく — anyway, at any rate, for now
2. Abstract Nouns (Common in Reading Passages)
N1 passages love abstract concepts:
- 見地 (michi) — perspective, point of view
- 範囲 (han'i) — scope, range, extent
- 弱点 (jakuten) — weakness, weak point
- 局面 (kyokumen) — situation, phase
- 大幅 (daihaba) — greatly, significantly
3. Formal Verbs
Verbs that replace casual forms in formal writing:
- 厳われる — to be demanded/required (formal passive)
- 蓄積する — to accumulate (experience, data)
- 係る — to relate to, concerning (formal: に関する alternative)
- 採用する — to adopt (an approach), to hire
- 畳まえる — to be based on, to build upon
How to Study JLPT N1 Vocabulary Effectively
1. Read Japanese every day
No vocabulary list can replace real reading. Aim for:
- One NHK online article per day (15–20 min)
- One page of a Japanese novel or essay per day
- Note all unknown words and add to Anki
2. Use a strong Anki deck
Popular N1 Anki decks contain 5,000–10,000 cards. Review consistently: 20–30 new cards per day.
3. Learn collocations, not isolated words
N1 questions often test whether you know HOW a word is used, not just its meaning. Learn words in example sentences: 政策を厳しく適用する is more useful than knowing 厳しく alone.
Sample N1 Vocabulary Question
Here is a typical N1 vocabulary question type:
Choose the best word to complete the sentence:
その問題は、この学校だけにとどまらず、社会全体に___する問題だ。
A. 関連 B. 共有 C. 拡大 D. 分散
Answer: A (関連する) — The problem is not limited to this school alone; it is a problem that concerns (relates to) society as a whole.
