Gairaigo: How English Words Become Japanese Katakana (And the Traps)

How English Becomes Japanese Katakana

Yuka

英語の言葉がカタカナになるとき、日本語の音の体系に合わせて変わる!子音だけの音には母音が追加され、長い母音は「ー」になる。「McDonald’s」が「マクドナルド」になる変換、面白いよね!
(When English words become katakana, they change to fit Japanese phonology. Consonant clusters get vowels added, long vowels become ー. The transformation of ‘McDonald’s’ → マクドナルド is a great example!)

EnglishKatakanaRomaji (reading)Change applied

注意!カタカナ語は英語っぽく見えても意味が違うことがある。「マンション」は高級アパートのこと(邸宅ではない)。「ナイーブ」は「感受性が豊か・純粋」という良い意味で使われることが多い。
(Watch out! Katakana words can look like English but mean something different. マンション = a nice apartment (NOT a mansion). ナイーブ = sensitive/innocent (often positive — NOT naive).)
