How to Type Japanese: Romaji Input Guide for Windows, Mac, iOS and Android

Typing Japanese is easier than it looks — you don’t need a special keyboard. This guide shows you how to type hiragana, katakana, and kanji on any device using romaji input (the most common method).

How Romaji Input Works

ローマ字入力はシンプル。’ka’と打てば’か’になる。変換キーで漢字に変えられる。慣れたら英語タイピングより速くなる!
(Romaji input is simple. Type ‘ka’ and you get ‘か’. Press convert to change to kanji. Once you’re used to it, it’s faster than English typing.)

The basic flow:

Key shortcut: After typing, press Space to convert to kanji. Press Enter to confirm the conversion. If the first kanji suggestion is wrong, press Space again to cycle through candidates.

Essential Typing Rules

っ (small tsu) の入力は子音を2回打つだけ。’kk’ → ‘っk’のように変換される。意外と便利!
(To type っ (small tsu), just double the consonant. ‘kk’ becomes ‘っk’. Surprisingly handy.)

Switching Between Scripts

かな/カナ/英数の切り替えはショートカットで。macではCaps Lockが便利。Windowsは半角/全角キーが標準。

Typing on Mobile

スマホではフリック入力が速い。最初は難しいけど、慣れると断然早くなるよ!
(On smartphones, flick input is fastest. It’s tricky at first, but once you’re used to it, it’s much faster.)

On mobile you have two main options:
