Typing Japanese is easier than it looks — you don’t need a special keyboard. This guide shows you how to type hiragana, katakana, and kanji on any device using romaji input (the most common method).
| Platform | Method | Setup |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 10/11 | Microsoft IME | Settings → Time & Language → Japanese |
| macOS | Apple Japanese IME | System Settings → Keyboard → Input Sources → Japanese |
| iOS (iPhone/iPad) | Built-in Japanese keyboard | Settings → General → Keyboard → Add New Keyboard → Japanese |
| Android | Gboard (Google) | Settings → System → Language → Add Input → Japanese |
| Chromebook | Google Japanese IME | Settings → Advanced → Language → Add Input |
How Romaji Input Works
ローマ字入力はシンプル。’ka’と打てば’か’になる。変換キーで漢字に変えられる。慣れたら英語タイピングより速くなる!
(Romaji input is simple. Type ‘ka’ and you get ‘か’. Press convert to change to kanji. Once you’re used to it, it’s faster than English typing.)
The basic flow:
| You Type | IME Shows | After Space/Convert |
|---|---|---|
| ni ho n go | にほんご | 日本語 |
| ta be ru | たべる | 食べる |
| su mi ma se n | すみません | すみません |
| a ri ga to u | ありがとう | ありがとう |
Key shortcut: After typing, press Space to convert to kanji. Press Enter to confirm the conversion. If the first kanji suggestion is wrong, press Space again to cycle through candidates.
Essential Typing Rules

っ (small tsu) の入力は子音を2回打つだけ。’kk’ → ‘っk’のように変換される。意外と便利!
(To type っ (small tsu), just double the consonant. ‘kk’ becomes ‘っk’. Surprisingly handy.)
| Special Character | How to Type | Example |
|---|---|---|
| っ (small tsu) | Double the consonant | kk → っk → コック (cook) |
| ん (n) | nn (or n before vowel-less position) | nn → ん |
| Long vowel (ー) | Use hyphen key (−) | ko-hi- → コーヒー |
| ぁぃぅぇぉ (small vowels) | la, li, lu, le, lo | la → ぁ |
| ゃゅょ (small ya/yu/yo) | Use xy prefix | xya → ゃ |
Switching Between Scripts

かな/カナ/英数の切り替えはショートカットで。macではCaps Lockが便利。Windowsは半角/全角キーが標準。
(Switch between kana/katakana/alphanumeric with shortcuts. On Mac, Caps Lock is convenient. On Windows, the 半角/全角 key is standard.)
| Action | Windows | macOS |
|---|---|---|
| Toggle Japanese/English | 半角/全角 key | Caps Lock |
| Convert to katakana | F7 after typing | F6 or Ctrl+K |
| Convert to hiragana | F6 after typing | Shift+Space or Ctrl+J |
| Full-width alphanumeric | F9 | F9 |
| Undo last conversion | Ctrl+Z | Cmd+Z |
Typing on Mobile

スマホではフリック入力が速い。最初は難しいけど、慣れると断然早くなるよ!
(On smartphones, flick input is fastest. It’s tricky at first, but once you’re used to it, it’s much faster.)
On mobile you have two main options:
| Input Method | How It Works | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Romaji input | Type a, k, n etc on QWERTY layout → kana appears | People comfortable with romaji |
| Flick input (フリック) | Hold a kana key → swipe in a direction for variants | Faster once learned; preferred by native speakers |
