N3 Study Strategy
At N3 level, pure memorisation becomes less effective. Focus on reading authentic texts (NHK Web Easy, simple manga, graded readers) and noting unfamiliar words in context. Seeing a word 5+ times in real sentences is more effective than drilling it 50 times on flashcards.
Yuka & Rei Level Up to N3
See how these words come alive in a real exchange between Yuka and Rei. Pay attention to how they explain — and occasionally correct — each other. That back-and-forth is exactly how language learning works.
Rei, I passed N4 and I’m starting N3 prep. The vocabulary feels so much harder suddenly.

N3 vocabulary jumps from about 1,500 to 3,750 words. The big shift is abstract concepts — けいけん (experience), じょうほう (information), かんきょう (environment). These appear in articles, news, and formal conversations.

I keep seeing 〜的 on words like かがくてき. What does that suffix mean?

〜てき turns a noun into a な-adjective meaning ‘relating to ~’ or ‘-ic/-al’. So かがく (science) + てき = かがくてき (scientific). せっきょくてき (positive/proactive), けいざいてき (economic). Once you know this pattern, hundreds of words become guessable.

Any advice for absorbing N3 vocabulary faster? I feel like I’m forgetting as fast as I learn.

Context over lists. Read short Japanese news articles or NHK Web Easy — they use natural N3 vocabulary in real sentences. When you see a word in a real article, you remember it three times better than from a flashcard. Try reading something every day, even five minutes.
