Reading Japanese News as a Learner

Japanese news is excellent reading practice — it uses clear, formal language, follows predictable structures, and covers topics you may already know in English. Start with simplified news (NHK Web Easy) before moving to full news sites. This article gives you model texts and vocabulary for common news categories.

Reading Strategy: Scan for the 5 Ws

When reading Japanese news, scan for: いつ (when), どこ (where), だれ (who), なにを (what), なぜ (why). Most news articles contain all five within the first two sentences.

Yuka & Rei Read a News Article

Reading and listening get better when you also reflect and discuss. Here is how Yuka and Rei unpack the key ideas from this topic — notice the questions Yuka asks, because they’re probably the same ones you had.

Yuka

Rei, I tried reading NHK Web Easy and the sentences are so long. How do I not get lost?

Rei

Find the verb first — it comes at the end of the clause in Japanese. Once you have the verb, work backwards: who is doing it (subject + は/が) and what they’re doing it to (object + を). News sentences are long but structurally predictable. Practice spotting verbs and the structure emerges.

Yuka

What vocabulary is most important for reading Japanese news?

Rei

Core news vocabulary: はっぴょうする (announce), かくにんする (confirm), によると (according to), 〜とのこと (reportedly), けっか (result/outcome). These signal-words tell you where information is coming from and what happened. Knowing them makes news far more parseable.
