Technology Vocabulary Is Mostly Katakana

Japanese technology vocabulary is a goldmine for English speakers. Almost all modern tech terms are borrowed from English and written in katakana. Once you can read katakana fluently, you’ll decode most tech vocabulary automatically. This article adds the Japanese-specific phrasing that connects those terms in real sentences.

Reading Text: Life with a Smartphone

いまの にほんじんの せいかつに スマホは かかせません。かいものから ナビ、けっさいまで、スマホで できることが どんどん ふえています。とくに わかいひとは、LINEや ツイッターなどの SNSを まいにち つかっています。でも、スマホを みながら あるくのは きけんですし、マナーも わるいです。でんしゃの なかでは おとを けして つかう ことが マナーです。

(Smartphones are now indispensable in Japanese people’s daily lives. Things you can do with a smartphone — from shopping to navigation and payment — are increasing more and more. Young people in particular use SNS like LINE and Twitter every day. However, walking while looking at your smartphone is dangerous and also bad manners. Inside trains, it is proper etiquette to use it with the sound off.)

Dialogue: Tech Trouble

A: ねえ、このアプリが うまく うごかないんだけど。
(Nee, kono apuri ga umaku ugokanai n da kedo.) — Hey, this app isn’t working properly.

B: アップデートした?さいしんバージョンに すると なおるかも。
(Appudeeto shita? Saishin baajon ni suru to naoru kamo.) — Did you update it? Updating to the latest version might fix it.

A: あ、してなかった。やってみる。
(A, shite nakatta. Yatte miru.) — Oh, I hadn’t. I’ll try it.

Reading Strategy: Katakana First

When reading tech articles in Japanese, scan for katakana words first. These are almost always loanwords you recognise from English. Use them as anchor points to understand the surrounding Japanese grammar and particles.

Comprehension Questions

  1. What apps does the text say young Japanese people use daily?
  2. What is considered bad manners on trains regarding phones?
  3. In the dialogue, what solution does B suggest?

Answers: 1. LINE and Twitter (as examples of SNS). / 2. Using the phone with sound on. / 3. Updating the app to the latest version.

Yuka & Rei Read About Japanese Technology

Reading and listening get better when you also reflect and discuss. Here is how Yuka and Rei unpack the key ideas from this topic — notice the questions Yuka asks, because they’re probably the same ones you had.

Yuka

Rei, I was reading about Japanese tech trends and I kept seeing デジタルとランスフォーメーション and DX. What’s DX in Japanese context?

Rei

DX(ディーエックス) = Digital Transformation — the push to digitise business processes. In Japan this became a major buzzword from around 2020. Many companies are ‘DX推進中’ (promoting DX). You’ll see this everywhere in Japanese business news.

Yuka

And for tech vocabulary — what words come up most often in Japanese tech articles?

Rei

The most frequent: じんこうちのう / AI (artificial intelligence), データ (data), クラウド (cloud), セキュリティ (security), アップデート (update), システム (system). Japanese tech writing mixes katakana loanwords freely with kanji — knowing both registers is key.
