JLPT N5 Reading Section Format
The JLPT N5 reading section tests whether you can understand short, simple Japanese texts about everyday topics. Most texts are 50–100 characters and focus on a single clear topic. Questions ask about the main point or a specific detail. This article gives you practice texts at the real N5 level.
Practice Text 1: A Note
けいこへ
きょう、かいしゃに おくれます。でんしゃが とまっているので、バスで いきます。じゅうじごろ つきます。ミーティングの しりょうは つくえの うえに あります。つかってください。

(To Keiko — I’ll be late to the office today. Because the train has stopped, I’ll go by bus. I’ll arrive around 10. The meeting materials are on the desk. Please use them. — From Taro)

Answer: b) — Sato will treat Yamada (おごります = to treat someone / pay for them).
N5 Reading Strategy Tips
- Read the question first — Know what you’re looking for before reading the text.
- Scan for keywords — The question’s key words usually appear in the text with different phrasing.
- Eliminate wrong answers — For N5, at least 2 options are clearly wrong. Eliminate those first.
- Watch for negatives — やすみ (closed/day off), 〜ない (not), 〜じゃない — these flip the meaning.

Question first! Read the question, understand what you’re looking for, then scan the text for that specific information. N5 texts are short (50–100 characters) and each question has one clear answer — knowing the question makes finding that answer much faster.


What kind of mistakes do people make on N5 reading?


Three common traps: 1. Confusing similar-looking hiragana in the text. 2. Missing negative forms (〜ない、〜ません、やすみ) that flip the meaning. 3. Choosing the longest/most detailed answer when the correct one is simple. N5 answers are rarely the complex-sounding option — simple and direct wins.

These sentences use core vocabulary from this article. Read each one aloud at least three times to lock in the sound pattern.
