The Desu Overuse Problem
Many Japanese learners fall into the habit of ending every sentence with です, even when it’s grammatically incorrect or unnatural. This happens because です is taught as the polite “to be” marker — so learners attach it everywhere as a safety net.
What です Actually Does
です is the polite copula — it’s correct after:
- Nouns: 「がくせいです。」(I am a student.)
- Na-adjectives: 「きれいです。」(It is beautiful.)
- Demonstratives: 「これです。」(It’s this.)
Where です Is Wrong
| Wrong | Correct | Why |
|---|---|---|
| おいしいです → okay ✓ | おいしいです ✓ | Special exception: i-adj + です IS accepted in modern Japanese |
| たべますです ✗ | たべます ✓ | ます already marks polite — don’t double-stack |
| たべたです ✗ | たべました ✓ | Past of verb → ました, not たです |
| むずかしいですです ✗ | むずかしいです ✓ | Only one です per sentence |
| たべないですです ✗ | たべません ✓ | Use ません, not ないです + です |
The i-Adjective + です Exception
Strictly speaking, i-adjectives don’t need です — 「おいしい」is complete. But 「おいしいです」is widely accepted as a polite form and taught in all beginner textbooks. Use it freely.
What’s NOT acceptable: い-adjective + だ in polite speech:
- 「たのしいだ」→ sounds childish or wrong. Use either 「たのしい」(casual) or 「たのしいです」(polite).
When to Use Plain Form Instead of です
In casual conversation with friends, drop です and ます entirely:
- Polite: 「どこへいきますか。」→ Casual: 「どこいくの?」
- Polite: 「たべません。」→ Casual: 「たべない。」
- Polite: 「おいしいです。」→ Casual: 「おいしい!」
Quick Drill: Is です Correct Here?
- 「わたしは がくせいです。」
- 「たべましたです。」
- 「むずかしいです。」
- 「いきますです。」
Answers: 1. ✓ correct / 2. ✗ → たべました / 3. ✓ accepted / 4. ✗ → いきます
Yuka Puts です Everywhere
Mistakes feel embarrassing in the moment but they are the fastest way to learn. Watch how Yuka makes a natural error — and how Rei explains the rule clearly enough to prevent it from happening again.
Rei, I use です at the end of every sentence to sound polite. But sometimes it feels wrong. Like おいしいです — is that right?

おいしいです is correct! For い-adjectives, adding です is the standard polite ending: たかいです、さむいです. The tricky cases come with verb sentences — you don’t add です directly to verbs. たべます already has its own polite ending.

What if I say たべるです by mistake?

たべるです is wrong — です cannot attach to dictionary form verbs. The polite form of the verb itself handles politeness: たべます. です is the copula for nouns and な-adjectives: がくせいです, きれいです. It doesn’t stack on top of verb endings.

But I hear ですね after verbs all the time in Japanese TV…

That’s ですね or でしょう acting as a softener at the end — expressing that the speaker is confirming or seeking agreement. たべますね — You eat it, right? The ね is separate from です. The pattern is: [verb polite form] + ね/よ. No extra です needed.
