The Japanese Convenience Store (コンビニ)

コンビニ (konbini) is far more than a snack shop in Japan. You can:

• Pay utility bills (公共料金, koukyou ryoukin) | Print documents | Buy train tickets | Send packages (宅急便, takkyuubin) | ATM withdrawals | Buy hot food and fresh bento | Pay for online purchases

Neighborhoods and Urban Layout

Why are police boxes (交番) everywhere in Japan? Are they for emergencies?

Rei

交番 (koban) are small neighborhood police stations stationed throughout cities. They serve multiple purposes: local patrol, lost-and-found reports, direction giving (Japanese police are famous for helping lost tourists!), and general community support. They’re not primarily for emergencies — that’s 110 (police emergency) or 119 (fire/ambulance).

Can I really pay bills at a convenience store in Japan?

Rei

Absolutely! Japanese konbini are incredibly functional. You can pay electricity, gas, water bills — just bring the payment slip (払込票, haraikomihy). Some accept credit card, others cash only. You can also use services like Loppi (ローソン) or Famiport (ファミマ) terminals to book tickets, print photos, and more.
