JLPT N3 grammar includes several patterns for expressing degree, extent, and intensity. These patterns are tested in grammar fill-in-the-blank sections and appear in reading passages. Master them to boost your score.
| Pattern | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 〜ほど | To the extent that | 笑えないほど悲しい (so sad I can’t laugh) |
| 〜くらい / 〜ぐらい | About / approximately / to the degree of | 死ぬくらい疲れた (so tired I could die) |
| 〜さえ〜ば | If only / as long as | 時間さえあれば (as long as I have time) |
| 〜だけ | Only / just | できるだけ (as much as possible) |
| 〜ばかり | Only / nothing but | 文句ばかり言う (do nothing but complain) |
〜ほど: To the Extent That
ほど compares degree — “to the extent of X.” It’s used to vividly describe how extreme something is.

この問題は子供でも解けるほど簡単だ。
(This problem is so easy that even a child can solve it.)

確かに!レベルが合っているかな。
(True! I wonder if the level is right.)
| Sentence | Translation |
|---|---|
| 泣けるほど嬉しかった。 | I was so happy I could cry. |
| 歩けないほど足が痛い。 | My feet hurt so much I can’t walk. |
| 信じられないほど安い。 | Unbelievably cheap (to the extent of being unbelievable). |
〜くらい / 〜ぐらい: Approximate Degree
くらい / ぐらい express approximation. In expressive speech, they hyperbolize — “so X it’s like Y.”

死ぬくらい疲れた。
(I’m so tired I could die.)

大げさ!でも気持ちはわかる(笑)
(Dramatic! But I get the feeling haha.)
| Pattern | Note |
|---|---|
| 〜くらい (approximation) | 3時間くらい寝た (slept about 3 hours) |
| 〜くらい (extreme degree) | 気絶するくらいびっくりした (so surprised I almost fainted) |
〜さえ〜ば: If Only / As Long As
さえ〜ば is a conditional that means “as long as only X (is satisfied), Y will follow.” It highlights the minimum condition.

お金さえあれば、旅行できるのに。
(If only I had money, I could travel.)

お金より時間が大事だよ!
(Time is more important than money!)
| Sentence | Translation |
|---|---|
| 健康さえあれば十分だ。 | As long as I have my health, that’s enough. |
| 練習さえすれば上手くなる。 | As long as you practice, you’ll improve. |
| 天気さえよければ出かけられる。 | If only the weather were good, we could go out. |
〜だけ vs 〜ばかり: Only
Both mean “only” but with different nuances:
| Pattern | Nuance | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 〜だけ | Neutral limitation / maximum/minimum | できるだけ早く (as quickly as possible) |
| 〜ばかり | Negative nuance: nothing but, always | 文句ばかり (nothing but complaints) |
| 〜だけ | Exact amount | 一つだけ (just one) |
| 〜ばかり | Recently/just (temporal) | 来たばかり (just arrived) |

彼は文句ばかり言って、手伝ってくれない。
(He does nothing but complain and won’t help.)

困るね。話し合ってみたら?
(That’s tough. Why not talk to him about it?)
JLPT N3 Exam Pattern: Degree Expressions
N3 questions often ask you to choose between ほど, くらい, だけ, and ばかり. Key deciding factors:
| Clue in Sentence | Likely Answer |
|---|---|
| Hyperbolic comparison (so X that Y) | ほど |
| Approximate quantity/degree | くらい/ぐらい |
| Minimum condition for outcome | さえ〜ば |
| Neutral ‘only/just’ | だけ |
| Critical / repetitive ‘only’ | ばかり |
