Japanese counters (助数詞) are one of the most error-prone areas for English speakers. Unlike English, which uses one word for all counts (“one, two, three…”), Japanese uses different counters for different objects. Here’s where learners go wrong.
| Counter | Used For | 1 | 2 | 3 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Mistake 1: Using つ/個 for Everything
「ペン3つ」より「ペン3本」の方が正確だよ!
(「ペン3つ」works but 「ペン3本」is more precise!)

「つ」はどんな物にも使えるけど、専用カウンターの方がネイティブっぽい。
(つ works for anything, but the specific counter sounds more native.)
〜つ (hitotsu, futatsu…) is a safe fallback that native speakers use, but using the correct specific counter marks you as a more advanced learner.
Mistake 2: Forgetting Sound Changes
Many counters trigger sound changes at 1, 3, 6, 8, and 10. This is not optional — the sounds change as part of the word.
| Number | 〜本 | 〜枚 | 〜冊 | 〜匹 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | いっぽん | いちまい | いっさつ | いっぴき |
| 3 | さんぼん | さんまい | さんさつ | さんびき |
| 6 | ろっぽん | ろくまい | ろくさつ | ろっぴき |
| 8 | はっぽん | はちまい | はっさつ | はっぴき |
| 10 | じゅっぽん | じゅうまい | じゅっさつ | じゅっぴき |
Mistake 3: Wrong Counter for Animals

犬は「匹」、馬は「頭」— 大きさで違うよ!
(Dogs = 匹, horses = 頭 — they differ by size!)

え、どこで切り替えるの?
(Where’s the cutoff?)

小さい動物(猫・犬・魚)は匹。大きい動物(牛・馬・象)は頭。鳥は羽!
(Small animals = 匹. Large animals = 頭. Birds = 羽!)
Mistake 4: People Counters
| Number | Counter | Pronunciation |
|---|---|---|
| 1 person | 一人 | ひとり |
| 2 people | 二人 | ふたり |
| 3+ people | 〜人 | さんにん、よにん… |
| How many people? | 何人 | なんにん |
Note: 1 and 2 people are irregular (ひとり/ふたり). From 3 onward, use regular 〜にん.
