Shadowing is one of the fastest ways to improve Japanese pronunciation, rhythm, and natural speech flow. This guide walks you through a practical 5-step shadowing routine you can start today — no special equipment needed.
| Step | Activity | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Pure listening — no text | 2 min |
| 2 | Mumble shadow — low volume with audio | 3 min |
| 3 | Text shadow — read + speak with audio | 3 min |
| 4 | Prosody shadow — focus on pitch and rhythm | 3 min |
| 5 | Record yourself — compare to original | 2 min |
What Is Shadowing?
シャドーイングは音声を聞きながら0.5〜1秒遅れてそのまま声に出す練習法。プロの通訳者も使うトレーニングで、発音とリズムが同時に鍛えられる!
(Shadowing is the practice of repeating audio 0.5–1 second behind as you hear it. Professional interpreters use it — it trains pronunciation and rhythm simultaneously.)
Shadowing works because it forces you to process language in real time — you can’t slow down or pause to think. It trains three skills at once:
| Skill Trained | How Shadowing Builds It |
|---|---|
| Pronunciation | Your mouth learns the exact sounds by mimicking continuously |
| Pitch accent | You absorb rising/falling patterns naturally, not by memorizing rules |
| Rhythm (mora timing) | Japanese mora-timed rhythm becomes automatic through repetition |
| Listening speed | Your ear acclimatises to native speech pace |
Step 1 — Pure Listening (2 min)

シャドーイング前にまず音声だけを聞く。意味が取れるか、スピードについていけるかを確認する準備ステップ。テキストは見ない!
(Before shadowing, just listen to the audio first. Check if you can follow the meaning and speed. Don’t look at the text.)
Play the audio once. Do not read the transcript. Ask yourself:
| Question | If Yes | If No |
|---|---|---|
| Do you understand ~80%? | Move to Step 2 | Find easier material (go down one level) |
| Can you follow the pace? | Move to Step 2 | Try 0.8x speed first |
| Are there words you don’t know? | Note them for after — don’t stop now | — |
Step 2 — Mumble Shadow (3 min)

最初は小声でいい。口を動かしながらついていく練習。完璧に言えなくても止まらない。音声に追いつくことが大事!
(Start with a low mumble. Move your mouth and follow along. Don’t worry about being perfect — keep up with the audio.)

完璧に言おうとして止まるのが一番ダメ。止まったら負け。そのまま続けることがシャドーイングの鉄則!
(Stopping to get it perfect is the worst mistake. If you stop, you’ve lost. Keep going no matter what — that’s the golden rule of shadowing.)
Mumble shadowing at low volume reduces self-consciousness and lets you focus on rhythm rather than projection. This is especially important for beginners.
Step 3 — Text Shadow (3 min)

今度はテキストを見ながら音声についていく。目で確認しながら話すと、知らなかった語も文字で確認できる!
(Now shadow while reading the transcript. Reading along lets you confirm words you didn’t catch by ear.)
Open the transcript (or NHK Web Easy article). Shadow out loud while reading. Benefits:
| What Happens | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| Eye + ear + mouth work together | Multi-modal input = stronger acquisition |
| You notice pitch accent patterns | Seeing the text helps you match tones |
| Unknown words become visible | You can note them for Anki after |
Step 4 — Prosody Shadow (3 min)

プロソディシャドーイングは抑揚・リズム・間に集中する応用練習。内容より「音楽性」を真似る感覚!
(Prosody shadowing focuses on intonation, rhythm, and pausing — advanced practice mimicking the ‘musicality’ of the speech rather than the content.)
Prosody = the melody of speech: pitch, rhythm, pausing, emphasis. In this step, you exaggerate — match the speaker’s energy and stress patterns deliberately. Don’t worry about exact vocabulary.
Compare: flat / robotic Japanese vs natural / native Japanese. The difference is almost entirely prosody. This step is where your speech stops sounding ‘textbook’ and starts sounding real.
Step 5 — Record and Compare (2 min)

自分の声を録音して聞き返すのは恥ずかしいけど、最も効果的。客観的に「どこが違うか」が一番わかる方法!
(Recording yourself is embarrassing but the most effective method. It’s the best way to objectively spot the differences.)
Record yourself shadowing a 30-second clip. Play it back side by side with the original. Listen for:
| Compare | What to Listen For |
|---|---|
| Vowel length | Is your oo long enough? Is your i short enough? |
| っ pauses | Are you pausing on っ, or skipping it? |
| Pitch accent | Does your pitch rise/fall in the same places? |
| Speed | Are you rushing or lagging behind the original? |
Don’t aim for perfection. Identify one thing to improve per session. Over weeks, the gap narrows.
