Why NHK Web Easy Works

Yuka

NHK Web Easyはリアルニュースを「やさしい日本語」に書き換えたもの。本物の文体で、でも読める難易度。これが最強の理由!
(NHK Web Easy rewrites real news into ‘simple Japanese’. Real style but readable difficulty — that’s why it’s so powerful.)

Most beginner materials are artificial — sentences no native speaker ever says. NHK Web Easy uses real news content simplified to N4–N3 level. Benefits:

BenefitWhy It Matters
Real vocabularyWords that appear in real life, not just textbooks
Real sentence patternsHow Japanese actually flows
Current topicsCulturally relevant context builds engagement
Furigana on demandYou can read harder kanji without getting stuck
Free daily contentNever run out of reading material

Step-by-Step Reading Method

Yuka

3回読む方法がおすすめ。1回目は意味を取る、2回目は知らない語を確認、3回目は音読。これで定着率が上がる!
(I recommend the 3-pass method: first for meaning, second for unknown words, third for reading aloud. This really locks it in.)

Rei

知らない語を全部調べると疲れる。まず意味が取れたかどうかを確認してから、重要な語だけ調べよう。
(Looking up every unknown word is exhausting. First check if you got the overall meaning, then only look up the important ones.)

The 3-Pass Reading Method:

PassFocusAction
Pass 1: MeaningCan you understand the article?Read without looking anything up
Pass 2: VocabularyWhat key words did you miss?Identify 5–10 unknown words
Pass 3: ProductionCan you explain the article?Read aloud or summarize in Japanese

Vocabulary Extraction System

Yuka

気になった語は必ずAnkiに追加。記事を読んだだけでは忘れる。アウトプットを組み合わせてこそ効果が出る!
(Add interesting words to Anki without fail. Just reading an article won’t make them stick. Combine with output for real effect.)

After each article, extract vocabulary using this system:

Article: 地震が起きた。

Target words:
- 地震 (じしん) — earthquake
- 起きる (おきる) — to occur / to happen

Anki card back:
地震が起きた。
(An earthquake occurred.)

Aim for 5–10 new words per article. Don’t try to learn everything — prioritize words that reappear in multiple articles.

Listening with the Audio Player

Yuka

テキストを見ながら音声を聞くのが効果的。音と文字が一致すると、リスニング力が格段に上がる!
(Listening to audio while reading the text is very effective. Matching sound to text dramatically improves listening ability.)

NHK Web Easy includes a text-to-speech audio player. Use it for listening and shadowing practice:
