Tricky N3 Words — Same Kanji, Different Meaning

以外 and 意外 are both read いがい — how do I tell them apart?

Context! 以外 (with the 以 of 以上/以下) = ‘other than / except’: これ以外は買わない (I won’t buy anything other than this). 意外 = surprising: 意外な結果だった (It was an unexpected result). On the JLPT reading section, you’ll usually see the kanji, so practice reading both characters!

What’s the difference between 目的 and 目標?

目的 (mokuteki) = purpose / goal (why you’re doing something). 目標 (mokuhyou) = target / measurable goal (what you’re aiming for specifically). Example: 目的は日本語を話せるようになること (My purpose is to become able to speak Japanese). 今月の目標はN3合格 (My goal this month is passing N3).
