Making requests, giving instructions, and asking for permission are everyday situations the JLPT N4 exam tests. This guide covers the core て-form patterns for polite requests and negative instructions in Japanese.

The most fundamental request pattern: verb て-form + ください.

For more formal situations — with customers, bosses, or strangers — use the negative question form.

〜てもいいですか: Asking Permission
Attach てもいいですか to ask “May I…?” The answer pattern is はい、〜てもいいです or いいえ、〜てはいけません.

〜てはいけません: Prohibition
Used to state rules or prohibitions — “must not.” Common in signs, rules, and formal instructions.

〜なくてもいいです: No Need To
The opposite of obligation — you are not required to do something. Formation: negative なくて + もいいです.

The JLPT N4 frequently tests these patterns in conversation fill-in-the-blank and listening comprehension:
