I know 似てる (niteru) means ‘similar’ and そっくり means… very similar? What exactly is the difference?

Rei

Good intuition! 似てる means resembling in some ways. そっくり means so similar they’re nearly identical. The difference is degree! Let me explain with examples.

Both 似てる(にてる) and そっくり express similarity, but they differ significantly in degree. Getting them right will make your descriptions of resemblance much more natural and precise.

General Resemblance

似てる (the casual form of 似ている) describes two things or people that have things in common — a partial or general similarity:

  • 兄と性格が似てる。— My personality is similar to my older brother’s.
— This painting resembles that artist’s work.
— Those two have a similar vibe, don’t they.
— This taste resembles something I ate before.
— The two plans seem similar but are actually different.

Near-Identical

そっくり expresses a striking, near-identical resemblance — often used when two people or things are so alike it’s remarkable:

  • あの子、お母さんにそっくりだね。— That kid is the spitting image of her mother.
— It’s natural they look identical — they’re twins.
— Their voices are so identical I got confused.
— This fake is nearly identical to the real thing.
— There are houses lined up that are all identical to each other.

So 似てる is like ‘they have similarities’ and そっくり is more like ‘wow, they could be the same person!’?

Rei

Exactly! 似てる = they share qualities. そっくり = they’re almost indistinguishable. You’d say 似てる about two friends who have a similar style; そっくり about someone who looks exactly like their parent.
