Some Japanese words look similar to each other — or to English words — but mean completely different things. These “false friends” and near-homonyms are a constant source of embarrassing mistakes. Here are the most important ones to know.

False Friend 1: 「気分が悪い」vs「病気」

「気分が悪い」は気持ち悪い・ちょっと具合が悪い感じ。「病気」はもっと深刻。
(気分が悪い = feeling unwell/nauseous. 病気 = being ill (more serious).)
