Describing a Cheerful vs. Quiet Person

I noticed 暗い literally means ‘dark’ — so calling someone 暗い as a personality is like saying they have a dark, gloomy vibe?

Exactly! 明るい (bright/light) and 暗い (dark) apply both to lights and personalities in Japanese. It’s a very vivid way to describe someone’s energy!

Easygoing vs. High-Strung

  • のんきで、何も気にしない。— She’s carefree and doesn’t worry about anything.
  • おっとりしていて、焦らない。— He’s calm and never hurries.
  • 神経質で、小さいことが気になる。— She’s neurotic and gets bothered by small things.
  • 気が短くてすぐ怒る。— He’s short-tempered and gets angry quickly.
  • 気長な人だ。— She’s a patient, unhurried person.
