Describing Ambition and Drive

These words describe how motivated or goal-oriented someone is:

• 彼は野心的な人だ。— He is an ambitious person.
• 向上心がある人は成長が早い。— People with a drive to improve grow quickly.
• 負けず嫌いな性格だ。— She has a competitive personality (hates to lose).
• チャレンジ精神旺盛だ。— He has a strong spirit of challenge.
• 努力家で、いつも一生懸命だ。— She’s a hard worker and always gives her all.

Reliability and Detail

These words describe how organized and dependable someone is:

• 彼女は几帳面で、いつも整理整頓している。— She’s meticulous and always keeps things organized.
• 頼りになる人がいると安心だ。— It’s reassuring when there’s someone reliable around.
• 責任感があって、仕事を任せられる。— She has a strong sense of responsibility — you can trust her with work.
• 約束を守る人だ。— He’s the type who keeps his promises.
• おおざっぱで、細かいことは気にしない。— He’s laid-back and doesn’t worry about small details.

So 几帳面 is more about being neat and detail-oriented, while 責任感がある is more about taking duties seriously?

Exactly! 几帳面 describes the style of doing things (carefully, neatly). 責任感がある describes the character value of taking responsibility. Both are positive traits!

Social Personality Types

These words describe how someone behaves in social settings:

• 社交的で、すぐに友達が作れる。— She’s sociable and makes friends quickly.
• 内向的で、一人の時間が好きだ。— He’s introverted and likes his alone time.
• 人見知りが激しい。— She’s very shy around strangers.
• 場の空気を読むのが上手い。— He’s good at reading the room.
• 誰とでも仲良くなれる。— She can get along with anyone.

Stubbornness and Flexibility

How someone responds to change or new ideas:

• 頑固で、なかなか意見を変えない。— He’s stubborn and rarely changes his opinion.
• 柔軟に対応できる人だ。— She’s someone who can respond flexibly.
• 頭が固い。— He’s rigid / closed-minded (lit. has a hard head).
• 融通がきかない。— She’s inflexible, can’t bend the rules.
• 視野が広い。— He has a broad perspective / is open-minded.
