電話する vs. 電話をかける: Don’t Think They Are The Same!

“電話する” means “call” which is a verb and “電話” means “Phone” which is a noun. The meaning of “電話する” is “to call someone” and the basic way to use it is “___(someone or store/company)に電話する(to call someone or a store/a company)” such as あなたに電話する(I call you.), ABC会社に電話する(I call the ABC company.) etc. Although 電話“を”する is the basic to use, native speakers tend to omit “を”. “電話する” focuses on “to call”. Some people use “電話をかける” as same as “電話する”. When using “電話をかける” in business situations, you won’t be able to omit “を”.

“電話をかける” means “Make a phone call” and which has been used as the meaning of “to dial someone’s phone number”. The basic way to use it “私は___に電話をかける.(I make a phone call to ___)”. For instance, “私は友達に電話をかける(I make a phone call to my friend)”. The tips for using it is that “電話をかける” is focused on “MAKING A PHONE CALL” that is not “to talk to someone”. So that’s why you wouldn’t say “私は友達と電話をかける(My friend and I make a phone call to ???) which we think “Where did you and your friend make a phone call together?”, so if you want to say “I talk to my friend on the phone.”, you would be able to say “私は友達と電話する。” which is correct. Although, “電話をかける” is used as the same meaning of “電話する”, there are subtle differences which “電話をかける” is more emphasized an action of calling. Lastly, native speakers often omit “を” of “電話をかける”, so they often say “電話かける” in daily conversations.
あっ、もうこんな時間！お母さんに電話かけなきゃ。 (I gotta maake a phone call mam.) (啊，都这个时间了！我得给妈妈打电话。) (아, 벌써 시간이 이렇게 됬네! 엄마한테 전화 걸어야 하는데.) (Á, trễ vậy rồi sao! Tớ phải gọi điện cho mẹ tớ mới được!)
