呼びます and 電話します — when should you use each? In English we might just say “call” for both, but Japanese distinguishes them clearly.

呼ぶ (yobu) means to call out to someone or to summon them — physically calling or inviting. 電話する (denwa suru) means to call by phone. Very different situations!
| 呼ぶ (yobu) | 電話する (denwa suru) | |
|---|---|---|
| Meaning | To call out to / summon / invite | To make a phone call |
| Method | Voice, gesture, or invitation | Telephone / phone |
| Example | タクシーを呼ぶ。 | 後で電話します。 |
呼ぶ — Calling Out and Summoning
呼ぶ means to call someone’s name, to summon, to hail, or to invite. It does not involve a phone — it’s about getting someone’s attention or bringing them to you.
- 名前を呼ばれた。— My name was called.
- タクシーを呼んでください。— Please hail a taxi (for me).
- 救急車を呼んだ。— I called an ambulance.
- パーティーに呼ばれた。— I was invited to a party.
- 先生に呼ばれた。— The teacher called me (summoned me).
電話する — Making a Phone Call
電話する specifically means to telephone — to communicate via phone. It is always about a phone call, not a physical summons.
- 後で電話します。— I’ll call you later.
- 友達に電話した。— I called a friend.
- 急に電話してごめん。— Sorry for calling suddenly.
The Overlap: Calling for Help
Both verbs can be used when calling for emergency services, but with a nuance difference:
- 救急車を呼ぶ。— To call / summon an ambulance. (more common)
- 救急車に電話する。— To phone the ambulance (dispatch).
呼ぶ is more natural for “call for help” in emergencies; 電話する emphasizes the act of phoning.
Common Mistakes for English Speakers
English “call” covers both meanings. In Japanese, always ask: is this a physical summons/invitation (呼ぶ) or a phone call (電話する)? Saying 友達を電話した is grammatically wrong — it’s 友達に電話した. And saying 友達を呼んだ means you invited or called out to your friend in person.
