What is the difference between “手持ち and 持ち合わせ”? Are the meanings of these “Money”? After reading this, you would be answering this question. Let me introduce what their subtle differences are and how you correctly use them such as native speakers today!
[wp-svg-icons icon=”checkmark-circle” wrap=”i”] 手持ち (temochi)
[wp-svg-icons icon=”arrow-right-2″ wrap=”span”] In(On) hand, Money on hand / 持有 / 소지 / Có sẵn, đang nắm giữ
“手持ち” means “In(On) hand / Money on hand” and which has been used as the meaning of “Something a person has now or Money a person has now”. The basic way to use it is “___は持ち合わせがある/ない。(___ has/doesn’t have money on hand.)”, “手持ちの___(___ in someone’s hand.)”, etc. (I have money on hand.)”, “手持ちのカード(a card in someone’s hand.)”, etc. The tips for using it is that “手持ち” has two means that are “MONEY a person has NOW” and “SOMETHING a person has NOW”. Furthermore, “手持ち” literally means “hand” and “to bring”, so “what a person has NOW” is “手持ち”. Everybody could use “手持ち” both in daily conversations as casual and in business situations as formal such as “手持ちの資料(a document/material in my hand)”.
(Show me some cards one has on hand!) (Cho tớ xem thẻ cậu đang giữ đi!)

[wp-svg-icons icon=”checkmark-circle” wrap=”i”] 持ち合わせ (mochiawase)
[wp-svg-icons icon=”arrow-right-2″ wrap=”span”] Money on hand / 现有的钱 / 갖고 있다 / Có sẵn, mang theo sẵn trong người
“持ち合わせ” means “Money on hand” and which has been used as the meaning of “Money a person has now”. The basic way to use it is “___は持ち合わせがある/ない。(___ has/doesn’t have money on hand.)”, etc. (I have money on hand.)”, etc. The tips for using it is that “持ち合わせ” is used as the meaning of “MONEY a person has NOW”. So, you could also say “私は今お金を持っていない。(I don’t have money right now.)” as the same meaning of “私は持ち合わせがない。(I don’t have money on hand.)”. Probably, you have money in your house, however, RIGHT NOW you don’t have money. Lastly, although “手持ち” is used as the same meaning of “持ち合わせ”, “手持ち” sounds a little bit casual than “持ち合わせ”. This doesn’t mean “手持ち” is rude. Everybody could use “持ち合わせ” both in daily conversations as casual and in business situations as formal. However, in business situations, you might want to use “持ち合わせ”. Lastly, native speakers sometimes omit “が” of “持ち合わせがある/ない”, so that would be “持ち合わせある/ない” sounds a little bit casual than “持ち合わせがある/ない”.
(Sorry, I don’t have much money on hand.)
