To Heal, To Get Better

治る is an intransitive verb (自動詞) — it describes healing or recovery that happens by itself, without specifying who does it. The illness goes away; the body heals.

  • 風邪が治る — the cold heals/goes away
  • 病気が治った — the illness was cured (it got better)
Yuka

After taking medicine, my cold got better.

JapaneseEnglish
Has the wound healed yet?
It takes time for that illness to heal.
Please rest until you have fully recovered.

To Treat Medically

治療する is a transitive action — someone (typically a medical professional) actively treats or applies therapy to an illness or injury. The focus is on the treatment process itself.

  • 医者が患者を治療する — the doctor treats the patient
  • 病院で治療を受ける — to receive treatment at a hospital
Rei

Notice: 治療する can be ongoing even without a cure. A doctor can 治療する a chronic condition that may never 治る. 治る implies a successful outcome; 治療する only describes the act of treating.

JapaneseEnglish
This hospital uses the latest methods to treat patients.
I had my cavity treated at the dentist.
Treatment will take several months.
