同じ is one of the most useful words in Japanese — and it has some interesting quirks that learners often miss. Let’s break it down!
| Japanese | Reading | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 同じ | onaji | same / identical |
| 同じく | onajiku | likewise / similarly (adverb) |
| 同じような | onaji you na | similar / like the same kind of |
What Does 同じ Mean?
同じ (onaji) means “same” or “identical.” Unlike most Japanese adjectives, it does NOT take な before a noun — it directly modifies:
- 同じ学校に通っている。 — We go to the same school.
- 同じ色のシャツを持っている。 — I have a shirt the same color.
- 二人は同じ誕生日だ。 — The two have the same birthday.
同じ vs 同じような
同じ = exactly the same. 同じような = similar, like the same kind:
- 同じ問題が起きた。 — The exact same problem occurred.
- 同じような問題が起きた。 — A similar problem occurred.

So 同じ doesn’t use な like other na-adjectives?

Right! 同じ is an exception — you say 同じ本 not 同じな本. This trips up a lot of learners!
Common Patterns
| Pattern | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 〜と同じ | the same as ~ |
| 〜と同じくらい | about the same level/degree as ~ |
| 同じく | likewise / same here |
| 全く同じ | exactly the same |
