The verb 住む（すむ） means “to live” or “to reside” in a place. It’s one of the most practical verbs for everyday conversation — you’ll use it whenever you talk about where you live or where someone is from.

Basic Pattern: どこに住んでいますか？

The most common way to ask or say where someone lives uses 住んでいる (the て-form + いる = ongoing state of living):

• どこに住んでいますか？ — Where do you live?
• 東京に住んでいます。— I live in Tokyo.
• 大阪に住んでいました。— I used to live in Osaka.
• アパートに住んでいます。— I live in an apartment.
• 一人で住んでいます。— I live alone.

Note: Use に (not で) to mark the location with 住む. に marks the place of residence.

Talking About Your Hometown

住む is also used when talking about where you grew up or are originally from:

• 生まれ育った町に今も住んでいます。— I still live in the town where I was born and raised.
• 子供の頃は京都に住んでいました。— When I was a child, I lived in Kyoto.
• いつかニューヨークに住んでみたい。— Someday I’d like to try living in New York.
• どのくらい日本に住んでいますか？ — How long have you been living in Japan?

住む vs 暮らす (くらす) vs いる

• 東京に住んでいます。— I live in Tokyo. (registered residence)
• 東京で暮らしています。— I’m living my life in Tokyo. (lifestyle nuance)
• 今、東京にいます。— I’m in Tokyo right now. (temporary presence)

So 住む is for official/permanent residence, 暮らす has more of a ‘daily life’ feel, and いる is just about being somewhere temporarily?

Exactly! In casual speech people often use them interchangeably, but 住む is always safe for “I live here” in any context.

Using 住む with も, か, and たい

• こんな素敵な場所に住んでみたい！ — I’d love to try living in such a wonderful place!
• 外国に住んだことがありますか？ — Have you ever lived abroad?
• 住む場所を探しています。— I’m looking for a place to live.
• 日本に住んでいる外国人が増えている。— The number of foreigners living in Japan is increasing.
