冷たい vs 寒い vs 涼しい — all three describe cold or cool temperatures, but they are NOT interchangeable in Japanese! Let's master this important distinction.

This is one of the most common mistakes English speakers make in Japanese. In English, 'cold' and 'cool' cover most cases. Japanese is much more specific. Let's sort it out!
At a Glance
| Word | Reading | Meaning | Used for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 冷たい | つめたい | Cold (to the touch) | Objects, drinks, food, a person's attitude |
| 寒い | さむい | Cold (air/weather/environment) | The weather, a room, the air around you |
| 涼しい | すずしい | Cool, refreshing | Pleasant coolness — a breeze, comfortable temperature |
冷たい (つめたい) — Cold to the Touch
冷たい describes something that is cold when you touch it or consume it — a physical surface or substance that feels cold. It also describes an emotionally cold person or attitude.
- 冷たい水 — cold water
- 冷たいビール — cold beer
- 冷たい手 — cold hands
- 冷たい人 — a cold/unfriendly person
- 冷たい態度 — a cold attitude

冷たいお茶をどうぞ。

| Japanese | English |
|---|---|
| このスープ、冷たい。 | This soup is cold (it should be warm). |
| 彼女は態度が冷たい。 | She has a cold attitude. |
| 冷たいシャワーを浴びた。 | I took a cold shower. |
寒い (さむい) — Cold Weather / Air
寒い describes the coldness of the surrounding air or environment. It's how you describe cold weather, a cold room, or feeling cold because of the air temperature.
- 今日は寒い — it's cold today
- 部屋が寒い — the room is cold
- 寒い冬 — a cold winter
- 寒くなってきた — it's getting cold

The critical rule: you NEVER use 寒い for food/drinks. You NEVER use 冷たい for weather. Saying 今日は冷たい to mean 'it's cold today' is wrong. Saying この水は寒い is also wrong — use 冷たい for water.

| 北海道の冬は寒い。 | Winters in Hokkaido are cold. |
| 寒いからコートを着た。 | It's cold so I put on a coat. |

涼しい (すずしい) — Pleasantly Cool
涼しい describes a pleasantly cool temperature — not cold, but comfortably refreshing. It's almost always positive, associated with relief from heat.
- 涼しい風 — a cool breeze
- 涼しい朝 — a cool morning
- 木陰は涼しい — it's cool in the shade
- 涼しい顔をする — to keep a cool expression (idiom: acting unconcerned)
