変態 (へんたい) — most English speakers know this word from anime, but its Japanese meaning is broader and sometimes very different from what you might think. Let's look at all its meanings!

変態 has two very different usages in Japanese: a scientific/biological meaning and a slang meaning. Understanding both will help you navigate real Japanese conversations and content.
At a Glance
| Meaning | Reading | Context |
|---|---|---|
| Metamorphosis, transformation | へんたい | Biology, science — the transformation of a butterfly, etc. |
| Pervert, deviant | へんたい | Slang — a person with abnormal or deviant behavior/interests |
| Hentai (adult anime) | へんたい | Loanword in English — Japanese pornographic anime/manga |
Meaning 1: Metamorphosis (Scientific)
変態 (へんたい) literally means “change” (変) + “form/state” (態) — a transformation. In biology, it refers to metamorphosis — the transformation of an insect or amphibian from one life stage to another.
- 完全変態 (かんぜんへんたい) — complete metamorphosis (egg → larva → pupa → adult, e.g. butterflies)
- 不完全変態 (ふかんぜんへんたい) — incomplete metamorphosis (egg → nymph → adult, e.g. grasshoppers)

蝶は完全変態をする昆虫だ。
Butterflies are insects that undergo complete metamorphosis.
Meaning 2: Pervert / Deviant (Slang)
In everyday slang, 変態 means pervert, deviant, or weirdo — someone whose behavior or interests are considered abnormal or inappropriate. The word can range from a lighthearted tease to a serious accusation depending on context and tone.
- Mild/joking: 変態!— You pervert! / You weirdo! (between friends)
- Serious accusation: あいつは本物の変態だ — That guy is a real pervert
- Self-deprecating: 私って変態かも — Maybe I'm a weirdo

The severity of 変態 depends entirely on context and tone. Between friends it can be playful. But calling someone a 変態 in a serious context is a strong accusation. Read the room carefully.
| Japanese | English |
|---|---|
| 変態みたいなことするな。 | Don't do such creepy/perverted things. |
| あいつはただの変態だ。 | He's just a pervert. |
| そんな趣味、変態だと思われるよ。 | With hobbies like that, people will think you're weird. |
変態 vs 変人 — Similar But Different
| Word | Meaning | Nuance |
|---|---|---|
| 変態 (へんたい) | Pervert / deviant | Implies sexual or morally deviant behavior; stronger word |
| 変人 (へんじん) | Eccentric / oddball | Just weird or unusual — no necessarily negative sexual connotation |
変人 is much lighter — calling someone 変人 means they're an eccentric or oddball. It's often used fondly. 変態 is significantly stronger and more negative.
In English, “Hentai” = Japanese Adult Anime
In English-speaking internet culture, “hentai” is used as a loanword specifically for sexually explicit Japanese anime or manga. This is NOT how Japanese speakers use the word in daily conversation. In Japan, そういう anime is usually called アダルトアニメ or 18禁アニメ.
