Dropped your phone. Missed your train. Stepped in something on the sidewalk. These moments all call for one word in Japanese: 最悪さいあく! This slang expression is incredibly common in everyday Japanese, and knowing it — along with its close cousin 最低さいてい — will make your Japanese sound genuinely native.

Yuka

Rei, I hear 最悪さいあく all the time but I’m not sure when to use it. Is it always slang?

Rei

最悪さいあく literally means “the worst” but in daily conversation it’s used as a strong expression of frustration — like “this sucks!” or “terrible!” It works alone as an exclamation, or as an adjective: 最悪さいあくな___. You’ll also hear 最低さいてい used the same way, especially about people who behave badly.
