What Is Difference Between “ie”, “uchi” and “otaku”?
“家 (ie), 家 (uchi) and お宅 (otaku)” might have been one of the complicated words for you learners. Let me introduce how you correctly use these words “家, 家 and お宅” today
家 / 家 / お宅 (ie / uchi / otaku)
House / Home / Your House
“家 (ie), 家 (uchi) and お宅 (otaku)” mean “House, Home and Your House”. The nuance of “家” is “House” and “家” is “Home”, lastly, “お宅” is “Your House”. “家” is basically used as the meaning of “physical” and “家” is “psychological”. So “家” is only used for “my home”. For instance, “私わたしの家(my home)”, “あなたの家(your house)”. You won’t be able to use “あなたの家” which is wrong. However, you could say “私わたしの家” and “あなたの家” that are both correct. Thus, when native speakers hear “私わたしの家“, they feel a sense of familiarity instead of “私わたしの家いえ“. And “お宅(your house)” is an honorific word of “あなたの家(your house)”, so “お宅” is often used as formal. Furthermore, オタク is “geek”. The pronunciation of both “お宅” and “オタク” is absolutely same though.
