What Is Difference Between “ie”, “uchi” and “otaku”?

いえ (ie), うち (uchi) and おたく (otaku)” might have been one of the complicated words for you learners. Let me introduce how you correctly use these words “いえうち and おたく” today

いえ / うち / おたく  (ie / uchi / otaku)

House / Home / Your House

いえ (ie), うち (uchi) and おたく (otaku)” mean “House, Home and Your House”. The nuance of “いえ” is “House” and “うち” is “Home”, lastly, “おたく” is “Your House”. “いえ” is basically used as the meaning of “physical” and “うち” is “psychological”. So “うち” is only used for “my home”. For instance, “私わたしのうち(my home)”, “あなたのいえ(your house)”. You won’t be able to use “あなたのうち” which is wrong. However, you could say “私わたしのいえ” and “あなたのいえ” that are both correct. Thus, when native speakers hear “私わたしのうち“, they feel a sense of familiarity instead of “私わたしの家いえ“. And “おたく(your house)” is an honorific word of “あなたのいえ(your house)”, so “おたく” is often used as formal. Furthermore, オタク is “geek”. The pronunciation of both “おたく” and “オタク” is absolutely same though.
