横になる: How to Say “Lie Down” in Japanese

What’s the difference between 横になる and 寝る? Can’t I just say 寝る for “lie down”?

横になる specifically means to lie down — to put your body horizontal. 寝る means to sleep. You can be 横になる without sleeping! Doctors often say 横になってください (please lie down) — they don’t mean “go to sleep!”

What Does 横になる Mean?

横になる literally means “to become horizontal” — 横 (yoko) = side/horizontal, になる = to become. It describes the act of lying down, resting horizontally. It does NOT necessarily mean sleeping — just taking a horizontal position.

• 少し横になりますね。 — I’m going to lie down for a bit.
• 横になって休んでください。 — Please lie down and rest.
• 疲れたので横になった。 — I was tired so I lay down.
• 医者に横になるよう言われた。 — The doctor told me to lie down.

So if I feel sick and want to tell someone I’m going to rest, which do I use?

横になります would be the most accurate — “I’m going to lie down.” 休みます (I’m going to rest) is also natural. 寝ます implies you’re actually going to sleep, which may not be what you mean.
